Legislative Hearing Scheduled
The State Senate and Assembly announced today a joint public hearing that will focus on the federal response to the COVID crisis, including but not limited to, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act, and whether the federal assistance provided was adequate and accessible for small businesses across the State. Thea hearing will be virtual and has been scheduled for May 13th at 10am.
Nourish New York
Governor Cuomo announced today the results of the Nourish New York Initiative, an effort to help connect upstate farms with those in need. The $25 million initiative helped bring together nearly 50 food banks and soup kitchens with over 2,100 farms and more than 20,000 households across the State in a collaboration to get much needed products from farms to people and families that need them most while also helping the farms find an audience for their goods.
Rent Relief
Today Governor Cuomo announced the extension of the March 20 executive order (202.08) that enacted a moratorium on residential and commercial COVID-19 related evictions for an additional 60 days, until August 20th.
Additionally the State is banning late payment fees for missed payments during this eviction moratorium as well as allowing renters facing financial hardship due to COVID-19 to use their security deposit as payment and repaying their security deposit over time. In accordance with this extension the Governor indicated that he is also “working on relief from the banks for the landlords” that could be seeing a longer gaps in tenant payments, as well as relief for banks themselves.
COVID-19 Numbers
Thankfully, we remain on the far side of the COVID-19 plateau. That said, the number of deaths in the State has increased by 231 since yesterday to 20,108 in total.
